PHEW!! The first group teaching the 5th graders today at Bishop Dunn were Irene and myself. Our lesson was on Life In New Spain. Our lesson had many different components including geography, explorers, and the encomienda system. We started off by asking the students what an explorer is, what they are looking for and if they could remember any other explorers they had previously learned about.
We then began showing the students the different routes that Hernando De Soto and Francisco Coronado took during their explorations during the mid 1500's.
The next part of our lesson detailed the class system that developed in this New Spain society. They learned about the 4 classes of people as well as what happened to the slaves that were forced to work on the plantations.
I thought the lesson went very well. The only thing I wish we did was remind the students while we were teaching the lesson to fill out the graphic organizers we had given them. Many of them did not fill them out as we were teaching so they did not remember some of the information when we were reviewing.
Next stop..... scavenger hunt!!
